Speed is the god that makes all the others possible. When everything moves fast enough, there is no time to ask questions. No time to consider the provenance of what we wear, eat, or discard. Fast fashion. Fast food. Fast news. Fast growth. Speed is not neutral. It is a weapon deployed against reflection.
Slowness is resistance. The act of making this work, gathering waste, heating glass to 1100°C, blowing it by mouth into reclaimed wood, is an act of deliberate slowness in a world that rewards the opposite. Speed will not last. The stumps already know this.
Materials & making
- Glass: 100% reclaimed window glass, collected from Dandora, East Africa’s largest dumpsite, by Greenthing’s women partners in Nairobi.
- Wood: Reclaimed tree stump and exposed roots, cleared for construction across Kenya, shaped by roadside craftspeople in Nairobi.
- Technique: Mouth-blown handmade glass, blown directly into the cavities of the wood at the Greenthing Hotshop, Nairobi.
Edition: Unique, 1 of 1. The glass form is 100% determined by the cavities of the wood. No two stumps are identical. No two gods the same. Upon acquisition each collector receives an individual material passport documenting glass weight, glass source, wood provenance, and full production record.
