The God of Extraction · Our Gods Must Be Crazy

Extraction is older than the others. It is the founding logic: that the earth, and the people on it, exist to be taken from. Land, labour, minerals, water, trees. Extraction does not ask permission. It operates under the assumption that everything is available, that everything has a price, that everything can be replaced once used.

The trees that became this wood were not cleared for art. They were cleared for construction. For buildings that represent progress on land that was stripped of the very life that makes such progress possible. Kenya is losing its tree cover. These stumps remember what was lost. The glass carries its own extraction story. Sand. Heat. Industry. Then discard. Then us.

Materials & making

• Glass: 100% reclaimed window glass, collected from Dandora, East Africa’s largest dumpsite, by Greenthing’s women partners in Nairobi.
• Wood: Reclaimed tree stump and exposed roots, cleared for construction across Kenya, shaped by roadside craftspeople in Nairobi.
• Technique: Mouth-blown handmade glass, blown directly into the cavities of the wood at the Greenthing Hotshop, Nairobi.

Edition: Unique, 1 of 1. The glass form is 100% determined by the cavities of the wood. No two stumps are identical. No two gods the same. Upon acquisition each collector receives an individual material passport documenting glass weight, glass source, wood provenance, and full production record.
