We do not produce to meet need. We produce to generate demand. To fill shelves that did not ask to be filled, to manufacture desire before the previous desire has been satisfied. Overproduction is the engine behind Overconsumption, and it runs without pause.
In Kenya, we see this in the mountains of secondhand clothing arriving from the global north. The overflow of production systems so large they have nowhere else to go but here. Africa as the world’s discard drawer. The wood is structural. It was load-bearing. Now it bears this god instead.
